Our Top 5 Tanning Tips

Our Top 5 Tanning Tips

01 Exfoliate!

Exfoliation is the first step before each tanning session. Exfoliating removes the dead cells from the skin’s surface ensuring that your skin is clean and ready to tan. The light penetrates the exfoliated outermost layer of the skin easier and activates the production of melanin. Also keeping your skin fresh and soft!

02 Moisturising is key

To achieve that golden glow moisturising is key, from the outside to the inside. Moisturise your skin with a hydrating body lotion to keep your skin smooth and hydrated. Drink lots of water.

03 Tanning Lotion

Always use an indoor bronzer or accelerator to get a faster deeper darker tan. The chemicals contribute to the production of melanin, the pigment responsible for skin colour. Making it possible to get a suntan in a shorter time. Note that lotions not made for indoor tanning can cause damage to tanning beds and don’t help develop your tan.

Store you favourite lotions indoors at room temperature. The ingredients in tanning lotion are heat activated meaning that the heat build up in your car can also activate your favourite lotion. If it gets cold it will break down & separate. By the time you apply your lotion it's effectiveness is lost.

04 Staying Safe

It is important to know your skin type before your first sunbed session and always follow your recommended exposure time. Your skin type determines the amount of natural protection you have against UV light, how long you can use the sunbeds for during each session, and how many sessions it will take you to establish a base tan. Tanning slowly and building a base tan is safer. We are happy to run through a skin type assessment with you when you visit Base Tanning.

Apply a lip balm with SPF protection.

Never wear makeup when exposed to any UV light. Makeup acts as a cover on your face, forcing the skin to almost suffocate and retain all the oil and sweat which it produces in the heat.

Always wear eye protection. Closing your eyes isn't enough because UV rays can penetrate your eyes through your eyelids.

05 Keep Your Colour

Preserve your colour with 1 - 2 sessions per week. Most people will develop a base tan in 3-5 sessions which can then be maintained with regular sunbed use. Ensure you protect your glow with a hydrating moisturizer after tanning this will ensure to keep you golden for longer.
